APPROACH

What we do

We deliver short-term intervention courses to groups facing adverse challenges. Through teaching the grappling sport, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we rapidly develop your client's personal feeling of safety, ability to trust others and help strengthen community within your groups.

TIMELINE

Your journey with us

Every great partnership starts with a conversation

You get in touch

We recognise that you are the experts at working with your clients and therefore ask you to be an active partner in ensuring the work we do is as beneficial for your clients as possible

We learn from you

We take the goals and aims of your organisation and thread them into a grappling course designed to help your clients feel safe, build trust and develop community.

We design a bespoke course

You and your clients will come down to one of our partnered grappling gyms (or we can bring the gym to you if easier for your clients) and deliver our Breakthrough Grappling course!

We deliver the course

PILLARS

Research highlights three pillars needed to overcome challenge and unlock potential, our courses rapidly help people to:

Feel safe

The personal psychological feeling of safety is the foundation for healing, recovery and necessary for building trusting relationships with others. There is not much more in this life as impactful or important than moving from a psychological state of danger to one of safety.

Build trust

The ability to trust both oneself and others are necessary and beautiful skills to possess. When able to trust we can take risks in our personal lives and start to form deep, meaning connections with others.

Develop community

In a world ridden with loneliness, community is the antidote to so many of our societies problems. We seek to help develop sustainable community where individuals can find healthy challenge, encouragement and support.

ABOUT

About Breakthrough Grappling

Breakthrough Grappling was born from repeatedly seeing, hearing and experiencing the transformative impact that training the grappling sport, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), had on the lives of people who trained it. Time and again, we would hear people share that 'BJJ has helped me be less anxious', 'It has massively helped my confidence' or 'the friendships I've made on the mats have changed my life'.

Beyond these stories, we also noticed a willingness between training partners to engage in deep and vulnerable conversations with people that had only just met.

That led to us asking...

'What is it about grappling that makes it have this significant impact?'

Which is the question behind Breakthrough Grappling CIC being formed.

The core team is made up of Kyle (picture above) and Toby (pictured below), who both have a passion to champion the individuals in our world that have faced and are facing adverse challenges.

Kyle brings the grappling expertise and coaching to the team. He is a full time professional athlete that has medalled at the highest levels of competition in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He also brings a wealth of experience working 1-2-1 with individuals that have complex needs and using BJJ as a tool to successfully support their recovery and development. Kyle makes sure Breakthrough Grappling only delivers the highest level of training and support to our clients.

Toby has trained BJJ for 8 years and started whilst studying Psychology at University, which is where the first seed was planted that grappling sports could be used as a tool for social rehabilitation. For his final year project he researched the impact of grappling sports on their practitioners and is now heading up the research and impact side of Breakthrough Grappling. Toby's focus is to ensure the work we do has real life, sustainable impact on the lives of those who engage with us. Since University, he has worked in Nottingham's charity sector focused on developing social businesses and supporting dis-advantaged people into work.

Together, they support other community focused groups by helping their clients feel safer, develop trusting relationships and to build a stronger community. As with these foundations, we know that individuals are more likely to have full, restored lives.

As someone with complex PTSD Kyle has managed to make me feel comfortable while maintaining a good pace depending on my mental & physical ability.

Still unsure? Hear from one of our clients, Ado!

Ado is a true legend who took part in one of our four week intervention courses alongside a group of 8 other men. It was a real pleasure to meet and get to know him and all of the other course participants.
